Astro Myth Busters

Extreme case sampling, and other methods used in evidence-based research, is a very helpful way of separating myth from reality. There are many myths in the world of astrology, and very few people exposing and identifying what is true vs. what is false (or a flimsy idea at best). Let's explore some of these myths. If you have any suggestions, please email me with your ideas.

Myth: The zodiac signs are the biggest representative of your personality traits.

Myth Buster: Based on research, the zodiac signs only show an energy process. They do not give distinct personality traits across all people that have a particular planet in a particular sign. This is perhaps the number one myth believed by many people. The signs do show the style with which you approach life.

Myth: Aries dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or a stellium - are aggressive, as Aries is the sign of the warrior (or so it is said).

Myth Buster: Research shows that Aries people are not more aggressive or warrior-like than other signs. In fact, they tend to avoid conflict. They seem to think it’s a waste of their time, so don’t tend to get involved in unnecessary fights/debates or conflicts.

Myth: Taurus dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or a stellium - are stubborn. You can not get them to do something they don’t want to do.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that the sign of Taurus is deeply connected to nature, and in sync with the natural unfoldment of life in a similar way to how nature unfolds. Taurus people listen to their inner instincts as to when the right timing is to do anything. This can make them appear stubborn, however that is likely a misunderstanding. Taurus does what feels right to them in any given moment, and it may not be at the same time that other people want them to do that thing.

Myth: Gemini dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or stellium - are two-faced. You can’t trust them.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Gemini’s underlying energy process is that of curiosity. Gemini is interested in pretty much everything that comes into their awareness. They are hungry to explore and learn. Their interest takes them here and there, and they can take interest in all sorts of subjects, experiences and people. People who don’t understand this energy might perceive them as two-faced, as they can appear quite changeable. This is not coming from a manipulative place, however, as the “two-faced” idea would indicate. They genuinely are extremely flexible and changeable by nature.

Myth: Cancer dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or stellium - are soft, nurturing and always sweet.

Myth Buster: Research shows that Cancer’s are very protective of themselves and their families or the group/tribe that they belong to. They often fight when they or their “family” feel threatened. They can frequently be found in positions in the military, and in gangs. They need to feel like a part of a family, and this can come in any form, not just the birth family. The key is that they need to feel that the group has each other’s back and will look out for each other.

Myth: Leo dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or stellium - are always seeking attention.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Leo’s can be as shy as they come. The sign of Leo is the most self-conscious sign, which means that they are hyper aware of themselves. Sometimes this will express itself as likely a lot of attention, while in other cases a Leo dominant person can be cripples with shyness and stage fright.

Myth: Virgo dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising or stellium - are boring and lack creativity. They make good accountants though…

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Virgo’s are frequently very creative types, often some type of artists, as they have a special ability to see the underlying perfection of the Universe, and can translate that perfection into the physical world.

Myth: Libra dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - can’t make a decision. They always need someone else to decide anything.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Libra’s need everyone to give their input, and everyone needs their chance to contribute. Libra’s need to feel a sense of equality, no matter if the person is a child, adult, if one is more educated or respected by others than the other, all are equal and should be treated as such. So, all members should give their input in a given situation, and then the decision can be made after that.

Myth: Scorpio dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - are the most sexual and sexy of all the signs.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Scorpio’s aren’t always obviously sexual, and are certainly not always sexy in their expression. Scorpio, in reality, is a sign that almost becomes what if focuses on. It merges with the activity that their engaged in. So, they are very intense. This is also a big part of why they are known for getting jealous in romantic relationships. They merge with their partner and their partner feels like a part of them, so if their partner looks elsewhere, it feels like a threat to their own identity.

Myth: Sagittarius dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - cannot commit, as their need for freedom is too strong.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that, yes, Sagittarius does need to feel that their life is an ADVENTURE. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t commit in love. They can have both a committed partnership and adventure. As long as they are always able to explore new horizons, and feel free to experience the excitement of life, they can commit just as well as any other sign.

Myth: Capricorn dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - are very serious and are undemonstrative. They don’t have any flare. They are better off behind a desk, managing a company.

Myth Busters: Research indicates that Capricorns do make good managers, however they can also be some of the most renowned entertainers. Capricorns are known to love to dress up for their work, wearing a suit, a uniform or some type of clothing that is worn for their profession. Elvis is a good example of this, a Capricorn who loved to dress up for the entirety of his professional career as a singer - he wore very sharp suits, and later sparkly capes and costumes.

Myth: Aquarius dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - are freaks and rebels. They are always on the fringes of society.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Aquarians are certainly not necessarily freaks who live on the fringes of society. They can even be extremely ordinary in appearance and behavior. One of the things that does stand out about extreme Aquarians is that they are very aware of how people fit into society, collectively and individually. There always want to be part of a tribe and social networks are very significant to them.

Myth: Pisces dominant people - Sun, Moon, Rising and stellium - are very spiritual. They are the most spiritually evolved of all the signs.

Myth Buster: Research indicates that Pisces are not more inclined to be spiritual or even religious. The quality that Pisces do tend to possess though is the ability or tendency to bring many different or disparate things in life together. Things that other signs wouldn’t think to blend, they will blend. The quality of Oneness, of not seeing distinctions between different “things”, this they use to blend the different aspects of life in ways that others don’t do.

Myth: The orbs (closeness of the aspect between planets) don’t really matter. Whether close or very wide, it doesn’t make that much difference.

Myth Buster: Evidence shows that orbs are one of the MOST important things to keep in mind in astrology. The closer the orb, the more important that aspect is. That is what I look at first in fact, what the closest aspects are.

Myth: The “Big Three” (The Sun, Moon and Rising signs) are all you need to know to understand a person.

Myth Buster: There is very little real information that you can glean by knowing someone’s “Big Three”…but I suppose it’s fun to talk about because it’s something many people know - similar to just asking a person their Sun sign in not so distant past.

Myth: The square aspect causes difficulties for the person who has this in their natal chart, or between two people in synastry.

Myth Buster: The square aspect indicates the need to take action only. It does not automatically indicate difficulty. However, whenever we take action, we can run into difficulties.

Myth: The trine aspect always creates harmony between the planets involved and in the person who has this aspect, as well as between two people in synastry.

Myth Buster: Research has recently revealed that the trine aspect does not always create harmony. While the energy between two planets - or in a Grand Trine pattern involving three planets trining each other - in a trine have a very smooth, easy ability to interact with each other, it has been found that if there is any disharmony related to those planets in the person’s life, it will be more agitating to them than average. The person will be deeply affected by the disharmony and it could impact their life in a big way. This becomes obvious when you realize that many people who have tight trines or Grand Trines in their charts are people who have obvious disharmony, like any people in the mafia or in other violent gangs. Also, people who get very fixated on something from their early life that was disharmonious, like parents that fought for instance.

Myth: Saturn always leaves destruction in it’s wake. Saturn always takes good things out of your life.

Myth Buster: Saturn cares about what is essential and that which will “last past death”. So the things that Saturn takes out of our life, during transit to our personal planets, are the things that Saturn sees as nonessential. Some of these things might be hard for us to let go of, but according to Saturn, we don’t need them or they’ve outlived their usefulness in our lives.
