George Michael

I have chosen the planets Sun, Moon and Mercury in the chart of George Michael to take a closer look at and investigate how they impacted his personal life, career and other aspects of his life. George has Cancer Rising, with the Sun in the first house (with Rahu), and the Moon in the second house. The Sun and Moon are in a Parivartan (mutual exchange) Yoga. Mercury is in its own sign of Gemini in the Twelfth house, also ruling the Third house. Cancer Ascendant people are highly sensitive people, and they are very inclined toward giving to others, to connect with others emotionally, and they want the people in their lives to feel nourished and cared for.

Starting with the first house ruler, as it’s one of the main planets that directly represents George as a person, the ruler of Cancer is the Moon, which is in the Second house, in a Parivartan Yoga with Second house ruler Sun in the First. The Moon is in a Great Friends sign, which means that the Moon will be able to do quite well in expressing its better qualities, and the Moon will feel comfortable in the Second house of Leo. The Moon is in the Nakshtra of Magha, known for its outstanding, often fame attracting qualities, which George certainly had. The Second house is the house of the throat, speech and the voice (among many other things), which is what George is mostly known for. He found great success early in life, and he was able to build on and maintain his success for much of the rest of his life. The Second house is also the face, and the Moon is known to give beauty, especially when it’s in good condition, and he also was known to have a very handsome and expressive face.

The Moon is aspected by Saturn in Aquarius from the Eighth house (opposition), which is known to cause depression or issues with low self-esteem when aspecting the Moon, which is the ruler of the mind and emotional nature. However, the Moon is also Rashi aspected by Jupiter from Aries, which would take some of that burden that Saturn has on the Moon, though it certainly could not erase it. The Moon is also quite dark, being only one house past the Sun.

The Moon in George’s chart has 20 point of Ishta (the ability to give auspicious or good results), and 40 points Kashta (causing trouble or hardship). 20-40 points of Ishta is considered average, so his Moon is just on the low side of average for Ishta.

Perhaps George’s Moon’s low Ishta along with the Saturn in the Eighth house aspect to the Moon caused him some of his issues with the law, which involved “lewd acts” in a public toilet and also is the time at which he was outed as being gay, which he had been able to keep under wraps for many years previously, as his attractiveness worked well in his favour with the female audience. This happened during the Moon Mahadasha period as well. George also later became rather overweight later in life and is said to have liked nothing better than to eat junk food and watch television late into the night. The Second house rules what we put in out mouth, and the Moon rules food, nourishment, as well as our psychological well-being. It’s likely that he was trying to fill a void with food, and the Moon in the Second would indicate this quite precisely. Saturn’s aspect from the Eighth gave him trouble for things that are considered taboo, things we want to keep hidden from others, and also sexual activity – especially types that might not be acceptable to the norms of society. George likely had psychological issues that were deep seated and had a profound affect on him through out his life, being that Saturn and the Moon had a full aspect on each other, and the Moon was one of George’s main self-factors, ruling his First house (of self) and the Moon itself is a self-factor in any chart.

The Second house also indicates our income and earnings. George was able to secure a great fortune by the end of his life through his talent in singing and performing. When he died he was worth around 97 million pounds. George’s success was not all due to the Moon however. George’s Sun was very powerful, and in the First house, in a mutual exchange with the Moon. This greatly boosted both the Sun and Moon and the First and Second houses, their indications and areas of life. Exchange of First house ruler with the Second house ruler is a Maha Parivartan Yoga, the best type of mutual exchange as it’s between two good houses, so the two houses are enhanced in a very positive way. This exchange is also a Dhan Yoga, bringing wealth to the chart holder, with the Second ruler of wealth in the First (the person himself). Having the First ruler in the Second gives one a powerful or persuasive voice. The person will be known for their voice or highly identified by it. When two planets exchange houses, they are deeply connected in everything that they do, the two houses will operate as if they are a unit. This can certainly be seen in the life of Geroge Michael.

The Sun in the First gives George an extra boost of star power. He would have been seen as shining quite brightly, with confidence. He inspired many people, as the Sun is known to do, and he was a leader in his industry, being one of the top selling artists and a prolific creator of music. George’s Sun has 46 points Ishta (10.7 points IxSxSD) and is also in a Great Friends sign in the Navamsa (and Vargotama), so the Sun’s strength carries into that important chart as well. The Sun is with Rahu, which would have magnified the qualities of the Sun, though he may not have known how to use those qualities properly or consistently, especially before his mid-forties. Rahu gives cravings and great desire wherever it’s placed, and relating to the planets it’s with, and it can also give fame, as there is much craving for worldly things and recognition or special attention. This seems to have worked well for George, in that he certainly did gain great fame and outward success.

Mercury is in the Twelfth house of Gemini, its own sign, so in great dignity. Mercury is conjunct Venus and Rashi aspected by Mars from Virgo. Mercury is losing much strength from Venus, 181 points, in planetary war. However, Mercury is doing well with 7.6 IxSxSD points, which is quite good and is able to give Mercury a boost in its ability to give good results. Mars, however, will be causing some issues for Mercury with the Rashi aspect, as Mars is an enemy to Mercury, and is also in Mercury’s other sign of Virgo in the Third house. Mars in aspect to Mercury can cause a sharpness of the mind and can make one a great debater, they will be more logical in their thinking, but also can give a harshness to the speech, or a bite with one’s words. This Mars aspect to the Twelfth house may also have increased George’s appetite for “bed pleasures”, which is one of the indicators of the Twelfth house, and Mars is also a planet of passion. Venus itself in the Twelfth would give this as well.

The Twelfth house is also the house of charity, and it turns out that George was secretly extremely charitable. Much came out after his death about all the people he helped. He would give to all sorts of charities and also to random people that he saw on tv talking about wanting or needing something. He would call in and donate anonymously. He didn’t do it for publicity. I think this speaks to the purity and power of his Mercury in its own home, even if Mercury did have some difficulties, George was able to use it in such a powerful and generous way, all in secret and not for attention or to appear good. Venus ruling the Fourth and Eleventh may also have contributed to his desire to give to others, as the Eleventh house is the house which rules over humanitarian organisations and large groups and the Fourth house rules our happiness, so he probably simply derived a lot of happiness through his giving.
